Of roughly 3,500 drilling rigs and production platforms in the gulf, fewer than 50 are in waters deeper than 1,000 feet. But the risks and challenges associated with this deeper water are much greater.
“The pace of technology has definitely outrun the regulations,” Lt. Cmdr. Michael Odom of the Coast Guard, who inspects the rigs, said last month at a hearing.
As a result, deepwater rigs operate under an ad hoc system of exceptions. The deeper the water, the further the exceptions stretch, not just from federal guidelines but also often from company policy.
So, for example, when BP officials first set their sights on extracting the oily riches under what is known as Mississippi Canyon Block 252 in the Gulf of Mexico, they asked for and received permission from federal regulators to exempt the drilling project from federal law that requires a rigorous type of environmental review, internal documents and federal records indicate.

GOOSEBUMP CENTRAL!!! This video embodies so much about moments, performance, vulnerability, honesty, and that visceral “oh shit” reaction that Flashpants & I are always talking about trying to achieve.
Flashpants says: This deserves a reblog. Because learning to love yourself truly. is. the Greatest Love of All.
Flashpants Song-In-Focus du jour:
If you’re like me, you never knew what this song was about. Please, read along…
Looking out
Across the night-time
The city winks a sleepless eye
Hear her voice
Shake my window
Sweet seducing sighs
Get me out
Into the night-time
Four walls won’t hold me tonight
If this town
Is just an apple
Then let me take a bite
Chorus
If they say -
Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
If they say -
Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
Reaching out
To touch a stranger
Electric eyes are everywhere
See that girl
She knows I’m watching
She likes the way I stare
If they say -
Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
If they say -
Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
I like livin’ this way
I like lovin’ this way
(instrumental section)
Looking out
Across the morning
The city’s heart begins to beat
Reaching out
I touch her shoulder
I’m dreaming of the street
Chorus
If they say -
Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
If they say -
Why, why, tell ‘em that is human nature
Why, why, does he do me that way
I like livin’ this way

First off, I mention- MJ did not write this song at all, according to the credits here. Yet, he knew it inside and out, as we see in THIS IS IT, he did for every song he ever performed. Amen AMEN how he owned it, and felt it, the quintessential performer.
Lyrics: So simple in premise- he’s inside, feels the buzz of the city outside. Hears a girl. Goes out, sees a girl- is she a prostitute? Likely. Either way, he goes for it, it’s Human Nature.
But it’s so tender and plaintive, his reasoning to the night, his self reckoning. “Why…” And that’s the only part anyone ever remembers from the song- the gut reaction, the visceral emotion.
He questions, bargains with himself, his own morals or place in the world, even though he talks about “they say”; it’s clearly his own projection. Then there is forgiveness and acceptance- almost won.
And a note to MJ:
You were sent here to set us in motion. Never of this world, from the start you were of another composition, another breed. You came, you loved us, you shared your light. I pray we can harness the momentum and spread the love and spread the love and spread the love.

form an electro-pop girl group duo based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn called Suspicious Package . Growing out of the New York burlesque scene, they began creating a unique brand of dance and electro-pop songs to compliment their high-energy dance performances, in collaboration with NYC DJs and producers. Suspicious Package is fresh from a residency with the Umbrella Hat Theater Company in Santa Fe, New Mexico where they taught the professional ensemble of performers in a range of workshops also open to the broader community: from burlesque, yoga, and massage, to the “Unleash Your Inner Pop Star” workshop series they created. Both graduated from Oberlin College, and have performed far and wide - from an east coast tour of nursing homes to local Brooklyn favorites like Glasslands, Jack the Pelican, and Bowery Poetry Club in NYC. Avid attendees of dance and workout classes at places from Alvin Ailey to Soma gym, Flashpants & Princess are excited to share with you their special breed of comedic high-energy dance workout routines!
